Alan McGowan was born in Glasgow, Scotland, where he also went to school and learnt to play chess. In a chess book in the school he came across the games and writings of the German master Kurt Richter, who is famous for bold attacking chess. McGowan started to collect everything he could on Richter and his life and in 2018 he published a huge and comprehensive biography about Richter that met wide critical acclaim. McGowan now lives in Waterloo, Ontario in Canada.
Alan is a reasonable club player and after leaving school he worked for American Express (4 years), Strathclyde Police (13 years, mostly in the Criminal Investigation Department-CID). In 1988 he emigrated to Canada where he worked for the singer/musician Loreena McKennitt and the Federal Government as a passport officer.
2/5/2026 – Paula Wolf-Kalmar only came to chess at the age of 30, but then went on to compete in three Women’s World Championships. However, she died young from diabetes. Much about the biography of the Austrian chess pioneer remains unclear. With his detective-like flair, Alan McGowan has brought order to the available data and uncovered new sources.
12/29/2025 – Some years ago, Alan McGowan published a remarkably comprehensive biography of the German chess writer Kurt Richter (born 24 February 1900, died 29 December 1969). But then McGowan encountered the fate of every biographer: he found new information. While it does not change the overall picture, it does lead to corrections in the details. 11/4/2022 – The Edinburgh Chess Club was founded in 1822 and is celebrating its 200th birthday on November 4. It is the world’s second oldest chess club in continued existence after Zurich (1809). Best wishes for the Bicentenary celebrations, and for the next 100 years!
