June 2017 Ratings: Majestic Mamedyarov is 2800

by Albert Silver
6/1/2017 – There can be no question it was a busy month overall. Consider that no fewer than 29 of the Top 100 experienced swings of 10 Elo or more. The biggest winner was unquestionably Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who has had an amazing run, winning the Gashimov Memorial, scoring later 4/4 at the Russian League, and 2nd at the Moscow GP to finally reach 2800. Of note also was 14-year-old prodigy Awonder Liang, who earned 33 Elo and is now 2521. Report, stats, and more.

FIDE June 2017 – Top 100 Players

(cover photo by Eteri Kublashvili)

There is no question the biggest winner and name of the new ratings list is Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who has been nothing short of sublime this last couple of months. Not only did he win the Gashimov Memorial for the second straight year, showing it was no fluke, but he then scored magnificently in the Russian Team Championship with 4.0/4, and then came clear second at the Moscow Grand Prix. The end result is that he gained 28 Elo and is now a picture perfect 2800, the first Azeri to so achieve. Fantastic. (photo by Eugeny Atarov)

Another winner was Ding Liren, who took clear first at the Moscow GP, winning the final round against Boris Gelfand in a fantastic game (annotated by GM Lenderman) to secure gold. (photo by Max Avdeev)

Finally, a special mention must be made of Vladimir Fedoseev, who seems to finally be coming into his own, having won the Aeroflot Open earlier this year, and now trouncing his opponents at the Russian Team Championship with 6.0/7 (earning enthusiastic applause by Alex Yermolinsky), and finally breaking into the 2700 club. Top climbers and descenders

The list below already tells much of the tale: with a huge list of players who experienced gains or losses of at least 10 Elo.

Aside from the majestic Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, two other players had other-worldy results in the past month, and incredibly in the very same tournament! Israeli Emil Sutovsky, president of the ACP, had a magic event at the Karpov-Poikovsky, with a 2900 performance, and earning 23 Elo in the process. (photo by Vasily Papin)

Usually, when one player shines the way Sutovsky (above) did, that is the tale of the event, but not so! Evgeny Najer caught up with Sutovsky in the last round, for an identical score and performance. Two 2900 performances in the same event? A record! In any case, this earned the Russian 24 Elo this month. (photo by Vasily Papin)

Congradulations Shakhriyar...
Petrarlsen Petrarlsen 6/2/2017 03:38
@ turok :

A possible objection that you could raise : You could say that, probably, these 12 2700+ GMs who participated in the Gibraltar Masters were "different" from the other 2700+ GMs (the argument being that, if they participate in such open tournaments, and the other not, this must be because these 2700+ GMs are REAL 2700+ GMs, and not the others, who would be much too "frightened" to play against under-2700 GMs).

But, in this case, what would explain that, when these 12 2700+ GMs play in the same tournaments than the other "bogus" 2700+ GMs, they don't win more games (in average) than the "bogus" 2700+ GMs ?

At first sight, the only logical explanation seems quite simply to be that a 2700+ GM is stronger than a 2600+ GM. This is perhaps much "too simple" an explanation to be convincing for some persons, but, as for me, I will continue to prefer this "too simple" explanation, until someone will have proven satisfyingly that 2700+ GMs regularly play at a clearly subpar level when they play under-2700 opposition...
Petrarlsen Petrarlsen 6/2/2017 03:18
@ benedictralph :

And the difference between the universities and the world of chess is also that, in the universities, obviously, there is no Elo rating... So it is necessary to use other means to mark the "level differences". But, in chess, the Elo rating already serves that purpose, so I rather think that too add supplementary titles would be rather redundant...
Petrarlsen Petrarlsen 6/2/2017 03:07
@ benedictralph :

"In most universities, there is a clear distinction of title between a "mere" PhD holder and an associate professor and a full professor... to say nothing of a Nobel Laureate which I think is factored into worldwide university rankings as well (...)."

But, in chess, the Elo rating gives immediately the difference between two GMs. When you see, next to a GM's name, a number beginning by 28, I think that, for everyone, there isn't anything more to add !

"No official titles distinguishing a 2450 GM from a 2850 GM."

I don't really see what we would gain by such supplementary titles : when I see, for example, a nice round 2800 next to Mamedyarov's name, it is clear as crystal to me that he is not quite an ordinary GM ! And it would be so even if I didn't know even Mamedyarov's name... Such numbers speak sufficiently by themselves !
Petrarlsen Petrarlsen 6/2/2017 02:53
@ turok :

"If these top rated players played in bigger tourneys where the different is from 2400 and up they would draw and lose as it has been shown and this in the end would force these insanely overrated ratings way down."

As many persons who defend rather extravagant theories, you don't make great efforts to prove yours !

I follow regularly the most important open tournaments ; 2700+ GMs are frequently participating, and my impression is that, in average, they don't perform much under there normal Elo level.

For example, in the last Gibraltar Masters, there were 12 2700+ GMs. There average rating was 2748, and there average performance 2731 ; such a 17 points difference between the average rating and the average performance dosn't mean anything, in my opinion.

6 of these 2700+ GMs performed ABOVE there Elo rating and 6 under it (a completely balanced result).

So this tournament seems to show, contrary to your theory, that 2700+ GMs continue to play more or less at there normal level, when they participate in a big open tournament.

And where is the problem if they lose one game from time to time to a 2400+ player, if they win most of their other games ? For example, still in the Gibraltar Masters 2017, the 6 2700+ GMs who performed above their rating obtained together these results, against under 2700 opposition : 34 wins, 15 draws, 2 losses (all two against David Anton Guijarro, a 2650 GM who performed particularly well in this tournament, as he finished the tournament with a 2859 performance). Quite a brillant collective result, in fact, quite in accordance with there 2700+ GM statute...

But, nonetheless, I would be quite interested if you have objective elements to prove your own theory.
benedictralph benedictralph 6/2/2017 01:51
@Petrarlsen:

The PhD vs Professor analogy isn't quite correct. In most universities, there is a clear distinction of title between a "mere" PhD holder and an associate professor and a full professor... to say nothing of a Nobel Laureate which I think is factored into worldwide university rankings as well (i.e. how many Nobel Laureates are working in the institution)... not just the number of PhD holders. So academia does make these classifications and with time, it gets harder and harder to get a PhD degree, associate professorship, professorship etc. because of all the work that has already been done. A chess GM on the other hand, is a chess GM. No official titles distinguishing a 2450 GM from a 2850 GM. World champion aside (which is just one guy).

Turok,

You might be an OK chessplayer, but your understanding of math must surely be substandard.

seeding porpoises? sounds fishy to me
drcloak drcloak 6/1/2017 10:44
@SambalOelek

For certain tournaments, ratings are needed for seeding purposes :\
SambalOelek SambalOelek 6/1/2017 10:02
well said Turok

i agree, lets just drop the ratings totally and play without ratings!

chess would be much more natural !
turok turok 6/1/2017 06:37
there are NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Super GMs please stop saying this -these are over inflated ratings by simply allowing the top players to swap back and forth gaining or losing points. 47 players 2700 give me a break people. If you have been noticing that when these so-called super GMs of 2800 or 2700 are in a huge tournament they lose or draw games to GMs all the way down to 2400!!!! Look how the lady champion has played great chess and taking these guys out with wins and draws. If these top rated players played in bigger tourneys where the different is from 2400 and up they would draw and lose as it has been shown and this in the end would force these insanely overrated ratings way down. But they do not so they stay higher than they are and that is a shame. Please stop insulting the past and present and future players by saying super GM like they are somewhat on a different level than top players of the past. Sheesh sorry so sick of this stuff.
Petrarlsen Petrarlsen 6/1/2017 06:20
Personally, I consider the GM title, nowadays, to be more or less the equivalent of a PhD in academic fields.

And I think that there is (more or less, still) as much difference between a "basic" PhD and one of the best professors of the world's most prestigious universities than between a "standard GM" and a 2800+ GM, so, for me, this isn't a problem.

Furthermore, with Elo ratings, it is not difficult to know who is who : for me, there are "standard GMs" (around 2500), 2600+ GMs, 2700+ GMs, and 2800+ GMs.

And, in my opinion, this is quite sufficient to know more precisely the level of a GM.

As for the fact that the GM title is a life-title, I find this rather logical, because, otherwise, I wouldn't even see the interest of titles ; if the title would be more or less linked with the Elo ratings of the players, the Elo rating, precisely, would be sufficient in itself, without any need of awarding special titles (and, by the way, in academic fields, a PhD is always awarded for life, so the idea of a "life-title" really doesn't seems extraordinary, in my opinion).
dumkof dumkof 6/1/2017 05:44
The GM rating inflation is a result of the increasing chess quality of the GM's and professional chess players in general, so it's something good :) No reason to complain at all!

Today, there are only 47 players above 2700 and only 5 players above 2800, so what do we need the extra GM titles for? Players above 2700 are already known as "Top GM". And there is also a "catagory" for professional players above 2250, starting with 1 and increasing by 1 per 25 elo increase.
Bertman Bertman 6/1/2017 05:12
I don't see it much different than what is a 'millionaire'. A millionaire from 50 years ago is certainly not the same thing as one today (presuming dollar currency for consistency), and even today a millionaire can be someone with ONE million dollars, or 800 million dollars. If multi-millionaire is the new 'title' just two million is enough, so all in all nothing is etched in stone forever.
drcloak drcloak 6/1/2017 05:09
@Truffaut

Some people would just like another category/classification. You can't take a 2445 GM vs. a 2800 GM game all that seriously
Truffaut Truffaut 6/1/2017 03:13
It seems that the only people complaining about "GM rating inflation" are non-GMs. Some people are never happy unless they have something to complain about. This is just an observation, not a complaint!
drcloak drcloak 6/1/2017 01:30
@Bojan KG

Agreed. What is especially comical is that you have GMs rated 2445 and lower. Also, the idea that titles are permanent for life seems to be an obsolete one. When was this implemented, 75 years ago?
Bojan KG Bojan KG 6/1/2017 09:51
GM title inflation has been around for a decade or more, ELO rating inflation likewise. Having GM in a range between 2500 and 2850 is unacceptable.
ex0 ex0 6/1/2017 09:48
Where is Ding on the blitz rating? He should be rated @ 2875, which should put him 2nd, just above Naka and just below Carlsen.
benedictralph benedictralph 6/1/2017 09:30
There should be a new title called "Super GM" or something which starts at 2800. Even a child can be a "mere" GM these days.
