At the start of the games the photographers have five minutes on the stage
to do their thing. Initially members of the public also stormed the stage, but
since round two only journalists with badges are allowed.

Up close: Peter Leko

Veselin Topalov, former FIDE world champion from Bulgaria

Vishy Anand, India, also a former FIDE world champion

Magnus Carlsen, the 16-year-old chess wonder from Norway

The journalists clear the stage (reluctantly) and the serious work can begin

In the audience: GM Vladimir Potkin, the second of Aronian, GM Arshak Petrosian,
Peter Leko's second, and Sophie Leko, Peter's wife and Arshak's daughter. If
you have done your math that makes Peter Arshak's son-in-law.

Veselin Topalov in a typical pose when in full concentration mode

Anand was horrified by the result of his opening play in this game

Vassily Ivanchuk seems to share Anand's skepticism over White's position

Ivanchuk vs Carlsen, Topalov vs Svidler (who is taking a break)

Both Peter Leko and Levon Aronian have yet to draw blood in this tournament

A view of the stage from the lofty heights second balcony...

... and a bird's eye view of the stage and the players below

Ivanchuk and Carlsen, each in their own typical thinking pose

Anand once again examines his nails while Morozevich ponders his move

Armenian top GM Levon Aronian, today in his trademark white suit

Peter Svidler making a move to hold Topalov to a solid draw

The press room, where journalists from all over the world congregate

Pilar Molina, press officer from Spain, and Aruna Anand, chess wife from,
in animated conversation. The discussion lasted, with short breaks, for over
four hours.

Vladimir Potkin, Aronian's second, jovially fraternizing with the enemy:
Peter Svidler and his second, Alexander Motylev.

Vova and Alex, friends indeed
