Jermuk R11: Hou Yifan loses final game, wins Grand Prix

7/29/2012 – In the final round of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix the reigning women's world champion Hou Yifan lost her game against the Ukrainian GM Kateryna Lahno, but managed to retain her lead after her nearest rivals Ju Wenjun and Ruan Lufei both also lost their games. Nadezhda Kosintseva and Katya Lahno finished half a point behind. Final report with game annotations.

Jermuk R10: Hou Yifan leads by a full point

7/28/2012 – And she does so one round before the finish, which means she will be at least equal first in the Fifth FIDE Women's Grand Prix (and in the lead in the entire series). Hou achieved this with a black-piece win over IM Ekaterina Kovalevskaya, while her closest rival, tragically WGM Ju Wenjun, stumbled against compatriot GM Zhao Xue. 7/26/2012 – The Chinese WGM Ju Wenjun has been alone at the top of the table for most of the tournament, but two draws allowed her main rival Hou Yifan, to catch her after a round eight win. With three rounds to go the two are a full point ahead of the rest of the field and hot favourites to win. 7/24/2012 – The Chinese WGM is still in the lead, with 4.5/6 points, but three predatory GMs, Hou Yifan, Humpy Koneru and Ruan Lufei are keeping a sharp eye on her (enough allegories to justify the thumbnail?). The performance of the top four is well over 2600, and, with the next group a full point behind, they are going to decide the championship in the remaining five rounds amongst themselves.

7/21/2012 – In round four WGM Ju Wenjun defeated her compatriot WGM Ruan Lufei to push her off the top rung of the scoreboard. Wenjun now occupies that slot alone, with 3.5/4 points and a 2847 performance. Three games were drawn in the round and three drawn. 7/20/2012 – After three rounds of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix in Armenia it is the only two WGMs in the tournament – all other players are IMs or full GMs – who have taken the lead. Both have 2.5/3 points and performances of 2797 and 2757 respectively. Fifth FIDE Women's Grand Prix starts in Jermuk

7/17/2012 – This event with zwelve elite female players is taking place in the Armenian hamlet of Jermuk, which is fast becoming a centre of chess, with it's third Grand Prix in four years. It started with a big opening ceremony on Monday, with the President of the country (and chess federation) present. In round one on Tuesday Humpy, Ju Wenjun and Kovalevskaya scored. Jermuk GP: Dzagnidze wins by a point and a half

7/6/2010 – Nana Dzagnidze drew her final game at the FIDE Women Grand Prix to finish at plus seven (9.0/11), with no losses and a 2747 score. For this 23-year-old Georgian grandmaster picked up a 6,500 Euro first prize. Tatiana Kosentseva lost her round eleven game but stayed in second place, a full point ahead of three players sharing 3rd-5th places. Final report from Jermuk.

7/5/2010 – With one round to go in the FIDE Women Grand Prix the 23-year-old Georgian grandmaster Nana Dzagnidze is in the lead by a full point, and so will finish at least equal first. Her closest (and only) rival Tatiana Kosintseva missed a clear win in round ten. It would have brought her withing half a point of the leader. Big illustrated report on rounds nine and ten.

7/3/2010 – GM Nana Dzagnidze has done it yet again: she beat her main rival Lilit Mkrtchian, with the black pieces, to maintain her 1.5 point lead, now ahead of Tatiana Kosentseva. Meanwhile an eerie silence has descended over Europe. The streets are empty. Everybody watching round nine in Jermuk? No, the football World Cup in South Africa. 7/2/2010 – 23-year-old Nana Dzagnidze is unstoppable. In round seven of the Women's Grand Prix she won her sixth game, the fourth full point in succession. Her 6.5/7 score in this event would be normal for a player rated 2923. The Georgian GM now leads with 1.5 points (ahead of Mkrtchian and Kosintseva). 7/1/2010 – Georgian GM Nana Dzagnidze, 23 years old, has won three games in succession and now leads the field in the Women Grand Prix by a full point. Lilit Mrktchian of Armenia has taken second place, previously occupied by Tatiana Kosintseva. After losing her first two games top seed Hou Yifan has scored 3.5/4 to edge her way towards the top. The Chinese GM has a magic potion.

6/28/2010 – After winning three game in the first four rounds 23-year-old Georgian GM Nana Dzagnidze is in the lead with 3.5/4 and a 2800+ performance. She is followed by GM Tatiana Kosintseva, who is being assisted by her sister IM Nadezhda. 16-year-old Hou Yifan, who is the top ranked player in Jermuk, lost her first two games, but has struck back with two wins. 6/27/2010 – This high-class event with most of the top female players and a prize fund of € 40,000 is the fourth of six to be staged in different places during this and the coming year. New: the winner gets to challenge the women's world champion (when did this happen?). Three rounds have been played in the beautiful spa town Jermuk. We bring you a big pictorial report.
