Training with Theme Blitz

Answer

Question: I would like to play several games in succession against Fritz using a selected board position / variation in order to better acquaint myself with the typical characteristics of and ways of treating the variation. How can I do that with the program?

Answer: That can be done with the function “Theme Blitz”, which you can access under the heading Training. At the start of the function the current board position with the opening being played is taken over. It makes no difference from what phase the position comes. But Theme Blitz is best suited for the learning and understanding of openings.

Let us take a practical example:

This game in a rarely played version of the Ruy Lopez comes from Mega Database and is in the process of being analysed by the Fritz engine. You would like to better understand how to tackle this system and you choose under the menu item Training – Theme Blitz. Your first step is to choose a playing level or set the desired thinking time for the game.

In the dialog box displayed you now see the position on the board.

You can now try out the variation directly against the chess program.

If the opening is relevant to you from both sides of the board, choose the function “Change sides”.  A helpful option for beginners is “Learn moves”. If you enter a move which deviates from the main variation, the integrated coach switches on and points out the deviation.

If you wish the coach shows you the correct move for the variation if you choose “Show move”.
