Format change in ChessBase Magazine

Question: I have been using ChessBase Magazine for a long time, but with the latest edition (CBM180) I have the problem that almost all the Chess Media System videos or the interactive format do not work.

This probably has to do with the fact that the videos are almost all in the *.mp4 format and no longer in the *.wmv format. That means that when I click on them, either only my video-player (VLC) starts with a full screen video (but of course without the board), or else the Chess Media System is started, but without the video. Only Mihail Marin’s article (Strategy) is in the usual *.wmv format and the said article works on my machine. The same is true in the column on "Openings videos" for the contribution by Daniel King, but the other two articles do not work.

Answer: There have in fact been changes concerning the video format we use. For that reason we bundled with CBM #180 a totally new ChessBase Reader 2017.

Perhaps the simplest way to download and install the reader is directly from our web site at

Then you will again be able to load all the videos of your ChessBase Magazine as usual!
