MegaBase 2017 contains many annotated games. With the help of the Search function in ChessBase or Fritz you can tailor your search to find just such games. Start the search mask and then click on the tab “Annotations”. A new window is displayed via which you can define precisely which annotations you are searching for.
If you wish to search through the database for any games which contain text commentary, activate the option “Any text”. A click on OK will start the search and all games which have text commentary in them will be listed. If, e.g., you now click on the tab “Game data”, you will see that the option for annotations has been ticked and that it can be combined with other criteria.
The dialog offers further useful options. Let us suppose that in a large database you have highlighted various games for future deletion. You can save yourself a manual search for those entries in the games list. If you activate the option “Deleted”, the program filters out from the database all those games which are marked as deleted.
The “Position” button filters out from the database all those games which do not begin with the starting position but which are a game fragment or a chess position. In a games list such game data is always marked out with a “P”.
If you tick the option for “Colours”, the program selects from the database all those games which have graphic commentary in the form of coloured squares and arrows. The search works in similar fashion with the other options, e.g. “Training” throws up all the games with integrated training questions, etc. Games which contain variations can be found by ticking “Variations” and “Any symbol” filters out from the database those games which have been annotated with the symbols from Chess Informant.
If you are wanting to look quite particularly for games with one very specific symbol, you can further define the search in the entry box for “Symbols”. Example: How does one find all the games in the database which have the symbol for “Unclear” in the annotations?
In the search mask you enter into the entry box for symbols the relevant shorthand symbol, e.g. with Ctrl-3 for “Unclear”.
The search will then list all the games which the annotator has classified as unclear with the help of the said symbol. If you load the game with a double click, you do not have to painstakingly search for the appropriate comment. What appears in the board window is the position immediately before the annotation and within the notation the cursor is placed one move before the critical position.
