Interpretation of rules on the chess server

Answer

There is a lot that goes on in the various rooms. The numerous tournaments which are regularly organised in the Tournaments room are especially popular. From time to time we get users complaining about the interpretation of rules on the Fritz server. For example, is it correct that when my opponent has only one bishop, he is nevertheless allowed to win on time? Absolutely so, these are the present rules according to FIDE.

In a blitz tournament on the chess server the following position arose:

This position was adjudicated as a win for White. According to FIDE rules – and these are in force on the server – a player has won by an over-stepping of the time limit if a mate is still possible as a result of bad play on the part of the opponent. That is specifically provided for in the FIDE rules. In our example that is clearly the case. Theoretically Black could promote to a knight and then cause himself to be mated after Nh2, Kh1 by Kf2 and Bg2. The decision of the tournament director was thus irreproachable, any other decision would have been wrong.
