Managing engines

Answer

For the user interface of Fritz/Komodo/Houdini & Co a whole plethora of chess engines is available. These chess engines are an indispensable means of help when it comes to evaluating a position or games. In addition to the chess engines which we ourselves publish, there are at your disposition on the internet numerous freely available engines, which communicate with the user interface via the UCI-protocol and can also be employed under Fritz or ChessBase. UCI-engines can be linked in via the menu under Engine – Create UCI Engine in Fritz/ChessBase.

Over time a whole host of engines will collect, including many different versions of the same engine. When you start the dialog to load one of the available chess engines it becomes more and more difficult to see clear because of the plethora of engines. Here you are helped by the function “Engine management” in the Engine menu.

With this function you can move into the column provided for Inactive Engines those engines which you do not need at the moment and the selected engines will not show up in the loading dialog with F3.

Putting the engines in the desired list is done via the two arrow buttons. In the left window there is the list with the presently active engines. Highlight an entry and move over the engine with the arrow button into the right window for inactive engines. This engine will in future no longer be shown in the dialog for loading an engine. You can reverse your choice at any time by moving the engine back into the list of active engines.
