Tip for handling the online database

Answer

The most favorable entry for the prospective customer in a database program specialized in chess represents the single version. The buyer receives the pure application program without databases like the highly recommended game collections Big-/Mega Database. A database program now needs data for evaluation, in the case of ChessBase game databases, in order to be able to play out its strengths. Does this acquisition make sense, isn't one of the chess programs with the database functions completely sufficient for storing one's own games?

Here I would like to refer to the Online database, which every ChessBase user has access to as opposed to working with one of our chess programs. Of course, access to the database also makes sense for users who have access to the carefully edited Big/Mega database.

The only requirement is an existing Internet connection. The huge database is continuously updated and optimized with search accelerators,so access is lag-free. In practice, you can use this database like a locally installed database. Here is a practical example:

Load a game into the board window or enter a game notation. In practice, it will probably happen more often that you want to have more information for a certain position. Let's say you are interested in the Petrosian system in the King's Indian Defense.

1.Nf3 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 O-O 5. d4 d6 6. Be2 e5 7. d5 Na6 8. Bg5

Right-click on the graphical chessboard to start accessing the online database.

The matching lots are immediately displayed in a separate window.

The window is clearly titled Online database, so you can see right away where the information comes from.Based on the board position, the common continuations are displayed. What can you do now with the displayed data?

Basically all functions are available as with a locally stored database. Load games, copy them to local databases or transfer them to the clip database and so on. All this is feasible with the online database, except for one small limitation, which you have to know. The maximum display for a search query is limited to 1000 games.

An additional information is the display of the total number of games found that meet the search criteria. Note that here the program gives priority to games of players with a high qualification, we find this useful. If the user finds this a limitation, he can - if more special data material is needed - bypass this limitation with the search mask.

For example, you can start the search mask in the database window by clicking on ONLINE and then Advanced.

Here you have the possibility to refine the search, e.g. to exclude remises from the search. The search mask is not as function-laden as the detailed search mask for the local databases, but it helps considerably.

With this procedure, the corresponding game list with the games found is also displayed in a separate window - as described above.
