Innovative engine window

Answer

ChessBase 17 extends the information content of the engine window and improves the understanding of the board position in an intuitive way. The window has been enhanced with new elements. Important new features are:

  • Display of the qualitative positioning of the pieces with color-coded elements.

  • Concrete display of the initiative. The number of gears indicates which side has the initiative.

  • How sharp, i.e. tactical, is the position? If the engine shows five flames, the position has numerous tactical possibilities.

  • Any unequal distribution of material is indicated with piece symbols in plain text.

The screenshot below shows the classic display of an engine rating, known for many years from common chess programs.

The user thus sees a numerical position evaluation in pawn units, calculation depth, currently examined move, etc.

Under ChessBase 17 the display looks clearly different.

You can already see a variety of new elements, such as the text comments, the collection of green buttons on the right and information on the left, such as the moves played in the game, as well as existing threats.

While some of the information displayed is practically self-explanatory, not all of it is. One important aspect is the new "Buddy Engine", about which you will find more detailed information in the manual.

If you only see the classic old-fashioned engine output, right-click on the engine output and make sure that the "Scroll Main Line " feature is turned off (no check mark next to it).

The visual display must be enabled.

For example, if you move the mouse over the train you want to see, you do not have to click on it, but simply move the mouse over the displayed move in the engine window.

The game board is displayed slightly inversively and the position that arises after the selection of the move is displayed on the chess board. So the user sees at once the position of the chess engine evaluated in the engine window.

In the right pane you can see colored markers next to the mini icons of the chess pieces.

Here the user can directly see how many of the pieces are on good squares and how many are not. A rich green is of course the best color, yellow stands for even and red for the worst placement.

The display becomes very concrete when you move the mouse cursor

If you prefer a more direct display, move the mouse pointer over the markers and then look at the main board. It will look something like this:

Each piece is assigned a color to transparently show how well it is placed on the board.

In the manual you will find more detailed information about the innovative engine display, which offers many new possibilities. For example, the user can take over the text comments generated by the program directly as comments in the notation.
