Tip for game comments

Answer

ChessBase 17 is excellent for commenting games with variations and text. The system is in itself a complete authoring system for commenting games and editing chess content.

It happens again and again in the support that users are surprised about the fact that their self entered text comments have suddenly disappeared or are not displayed. This can have two common causes.

Make sure that the option Display text annotations is activated in the Options under Notation - Annotations. This is a basic requirement for the display of text comments.

If the option is enabled, there is another possible cause for the comments not being displayed. To understand the problem, let's take a look at the text comments input window.

Next to the input area for the text comments you will find several tabs. Via the switches you set the language for the text comment to be displayed. Under CB17 you can optionally add languages.

"English" stands for English text comments, "Deutsch" for German text comments and so on. The text comments are only displayed if the user has made the corresponding language setting in the program as described below.

If text comments are entered via "All", the comments are always displayed - regardless of the user's language setting. The text comment is closed with a click on OK.

The reason for the "disappeared" game comments becomes finally clear if you check the language settings under Options - Language.

In the illustration, "German" was selected as the main language, and " English" as the second language. If you activate the " One " switch with the mouse, only comments entered by the commentator under "First language" will be displayed. "Both" displays comments in the two preset languages, while "All" ensures that comments are always displayed - regardless of the language setting.

So disappearing text comments almost always result from wrong settings. If the text comment was entered with a language setting that was not set in the program, it will not be displayed. The safest way to enter text comments is to simply activate the "All" switch and check that the setting mentioned at the beginning of the text is activated.
