Question: one of the main reasons for my purchase of the new ChessBase 17 program is to optimize my opening training and to quickly sift through my preferred opening variations. Can the program compile appropriate material for my repertoire in a largely automated way?

Answer: ChessBase 17 covers the demands of professional chess players and therefore offers a variety of functions that specifically support the user in opening preparation. A largely automated possibility for opening preparation would be the use of the opening report. This function automatically provides information on a selected opening variation and makes the information available in the form of the database texts known by the program. The information of the opening report generated by the program is not only temporarily available, but can be permanently stored in a database for permanent use including the comparison games.

As an example, let's look at this variation/position from the Scottish opening.

To realize the explanations in the introduction text, proceed as described below:

Create a new database BEFORE the opening report, in which you want to store the contents of the opening report. It is best to give the new database a meaningful name.

Run the opening report with the desired notation/board position. You can find the call of the function under menu Report - Opening report.

After the report has been executed, please do the following:

You switch to the database text and select "Save as ..." and now select the previously created new database in the file dialog.

In the query dialog you will then find the corresponding options.

If you want to include the games in the new database, select "Export Games".

 

"Export Keys" is supposed to copy the opening key of the selected system, but it is not really needed here in the limited variant selection. Usually the user can ignore this option.

In the last step, the program gives you the option to specify a title for the database text.

Now a little patience is still required, until then all necessary information is transferred and the database with the report is permanently available in the database window.
