Find material constellations

Answer

The new ChessBase17 offers a simple possibility to filter out games with a certain material constellation from a database. In many Chess books it is explained that the possession of a bishop pair is advantageous over knights or the combination knight/bishop.

With the new simplified search mask it is no problem at all to find suitable comparison games in a selected database. In the example a database with games of Magnus Carlsen is searched for this criterion to answer the following question: how does one of the best players of all times use the bishop pair in his games?

Right click DB icon -> Search

This will start the new search mask and select the entry " Any material ".

The input dialog now looks like this with input board for defining the material:

By clicking on the button Clear you remove the figures and set the desired material constellation via the figure buttons.

During the input, the program immediately displays the number of lots that correspond to the search criterion/material constellation.

OK- Search completes the input and the search is started. In the Search Result window the matching games are listed and you can directly follow in the board window how Magnus Carlsen uses the bishop pair in his games.

There is a small pull-down menu in the dialog where you can select predefined, frequently occurring material constellations for the endgame directly in the dialog.
