Question: I want to use the freeware engine Stockfish in combination with Fritz18 and the current ChessBase 17. I have downloaded the engine from the developers' download site. When I select the engine under the menu item "Engine" → "Create UCI Engine" and the downloaded engine EXE file, nothing happens. The engine does not load under the user interface and the chess engine does not start.
Does the engine not run under the user interface of Fritz 18 or ChessBase 17?
Answer: Our programs support the UCI protocol without any restrictions. Every chess engine that supports the standardized UCI protocol also runs under the current user interfaces that are offered by us.
One explanation for the problem you describe is that the Stockfish developers offer customized versions for different processors. So you should make sure that you use the version that fits the processor that is installed in your computer.
Alternatively, choose a version designed for older processor versions! These will run without problems, the small differences in performance will not significantly reduce the quality of the analysis.
