What does beauty mean ...

Answer

Beauty is very subjective interpretable, the assignment depends on the preferences of the observer. Now in ChessBase 17 you will find a new function that assigns beauty values to games in a database. How can the term beauty be defined mathematically concretely for a database program?

The new function mainly considers tactical motives within a game and is only available if the database to be classified is in the new 2CBH format.

Now to the practical application of the function. ChessBase power users work with databases containing several million games. How can the user now quickly and with a few clicks find especially games in which tactical "high action" took place?

Open the games list of the database in 2CBH format.

Games menu - Set beauty

The program uses an engine to check each game in fast forward and set the values for "beauty", in four levels. The beauty value is assigned in a new column of the game list between zero and three medals. This makes each database sortable by beauty, i.e. the spectacular games are at the top. The classification is saved permanently, this is only possible in the new data format (2CBH).

When you classify, it can take time with large databases because every game/position is checked with an engine. Journalists use this function to find the most spectacular games of a tournament. You could also compile for a database with games of your favorite player and classify his games with it. For example, it is interesting to check the games of a feared tactician like former world champion Mikhail Tal with the beauty values.

Tal was an aggressive, courageous player and therefore it is not surprising that the classification by beauty is particularly productive. After you have loaded a game, you can directly display the critical moments of the game in the notation with the function " Detect Sacrifies "!
