One of the essential functions of the database program and our chess programs is the possibility to comment on games. This is not only useful for journalists or blog operators, but every user can benefit from this function when analyzing and commenting on his own games afterwards. There are a variety of extremely useful tools for commenting, within this article we will present the most important functions.
Load a game into the board window displaying board position, notation and game headers. At the bottom of the notation window you will find the comment bar, which allows you to insert the most important comment symbols directly into the notation with a mouse click.
For example, by clicking the button you can insert a diagram.
A largely unknown option: you can also simply enter the preferred keyboard shortcuts using the keyboard! For example, enter an exclamation mark via the keyboard.
This allows you to very quickly annotate a game notation using the keyboard shortcuts without clicking the mouse. For decades, the Chess Informator was the indispensable standard for viewing chess games. To ensure that the annotations were understandable to all players, regardless of their native language, a standard for annotations/comments was set by the editors of the Informator over the years. You can access these symbols within ChessBase via the annotation palette.
You start the comments palette via the menu Insert - Comments.
If you work as much as possible with the keyboard, it is even faster with the Ctrl-Shift-S hotkey. Now you can see all comment symbols via the palette, if you pause with the mouse over a symbol, the meaning is displayed.
Of course, a text comment is more meaningful than comment symbols. Use our programs to insert your views, assessments and comments via text into the relevant parts of the notation.
With a double click on a move in the notation you start the input window for the text comments. Optionally you can define the language setting.
You can now add comments in multiple languages and specify which language setting of the text is displayed. If you select the "All" option, all text comments - regardless of the language - will be displayed.
Text comments can be added before or after a move. To do this, simply click the red or black pawn icon in the comment bar below the notation, but it also works - as so often within the program - with a right-click on a move.
Besides text, variants are an important part of a well annotated game. There is no good chess book without illustrating variants, of course you can integrate them into the notation within our programs!
If you want to add a new alternative move to an existing variation, the program offers the variation dialog by holding down the CTRL key.
You can specify here whether you want to start a new variant, create a new main line or overwrite the existing move. If you enter the alternative move without pressing the CTRL key, it will be inserted directly into the notation.
Finally, you can change the structure of the variants in a complex variant tree. Here, too, a right-click helps in an uncomplicated way.
Use the presented functions to deal with your own or important games afterwards. You can exchange knowledge with other chess friends, coaches etc. via the extended notations and thus do a lot for the improvement of your own playing strength.
