Create position tree

Answer

Our programs offer many possibilities for training chess openings. The chess program plays its moves in the initial phase directly without calculation. PowerFritz18 has access to the Powerbook 2022, an opening file, which stores a large number of proven opening moves. The opening file of a chess program is called an opening book or position tree.

A position tree is therefore a database that contains only positions. For this reason, the format of the opening book is also called a position tree.

For opening training, a position tree offers the following advantages:

  • For any board position, you get an overview of all moves played, including meaningful statistics.

  • Move changes are reliably recognized with this concept!

  • A position tree is already included in the scope of delivery of each of our chess programs.

In practice, however, it will often happen that you want to create your own topic-related opening books for your training. You can easily do this with any of our chess programs.

Basics

Let's assume you want your chess program to play exactly the openings Magnus Carlsen uses in his own practice. Opening systems, which are used by one of the best chess players and best opening experts of all times, must have advantages, which you want to/can try out against your electronic "grandmaster".

We have to make some preparations and need

  • A new opening book
  • A database of Magnus Carlsen's games, which will serve as the basis for our opening book.

Tip: The procedure for creating a new book is always the same. You need an opening book and games ( a database) that you can import into your opening book.

Create new book

Menu File - New - Opening Book.In the file selection box you can enter a name for your new book, e.g. Carlsen.Ctg.

Tip: You should remember that you always recognize Fritz books by the file extension CTG.

Create database

Now we need a database with Carlsen games, which we want to import into our new book. How do we get these games ? An ideal basis for this are the game collections Big DataBase/MegaBase delivered by us with far more than 7 million chess games. Now let's create a new database, which we want to fill with Carlsen games.

For this the following steps are necessary:

Create a new database via menu File - New - Database. In our example we assign the name carlsen.cbh for our new database.

Now we have to copy the games of Carlsen from MegaBase or another source database into our new database. In the database window, open the source database that contains games by Carlsen and start the search function.

Now enter Carlsen as the search term in the search mask of the chess program. The search should only include the games when Carlsen played at the absolute top level.

The database module now searches the source database and lists all of Carlsen's games from the defined period. We have to save these games, which serve us as data basis for our new book, in the newly created database.

Select the first entry in the list with the search result and press the key combination SHIFT - END. As you can see, all list entries are marked dark at once. Copy the game entries to the clipboard, open the target database, in our example the newly created database carlsen.cbh. Confirm with OK and we have a game database that serves as the basis for our new opening book.

Transferring games to the book

Now we come to the last step: we transfer Carlsen's games into our previously created opening book. In the main screen of Fritz we find the menu item Opening - Book - Import games. Of course we enter our new database carlsen.Ctg as source in the file selection box and confirm with Open.

Now the program starts the Import Games dialog box, which looks like this:

Done ! As you can see now in the book window next to the chess board, the book is filled with content and the chess program will from now on follow Magnus Carlsen's opening repertoire.

Opening book with Carlsen repertoire

You can control the opening behavior of the program via the Book Options dialog.

Studying the possibilities of the position tree is definitely worthwhile. There is no better tool for professional opening training, because the application possibilities of this feature are almost inexhaustible. For example, use the ECO classification or the opening key to create a position tree that contains only your favorite openings, or prepare for your future opponents by feeding Fritz & Co with their games.
