ChessBase is in contrast to our chess programs, e.g. Fritz18, a pure database program and offers for example no game functions. In order for the user to be able to use the numerous statistical functions efficiently, the user absolutely needs a well-edited database such as the Big/Mega Database offered by us.
A database must be used by the program as a reference database, i.e. it must serve as a reference/comparison for the defined search queries. The Mega offered by us contains millions of games, the period covers meanwhile in the current version the complete known history of tournament chess. A special feature of Mega is also that the spellings of player names, tournaments, etc. are unified. This is an important basic requirement for precise evaluations, e.g. for player statistics or player dossiers.
We offer Mega owners the optional possibility to supplement their existing reference database with the latest games from current tournaments. This allows you to optimally prepare for opponents or follow the current opening trends.
An important step in setting up the program is to define the reference database. So you have to give the program explicit information which database should be used as reference.
To do this, the following steps are necessary.
In the database window, right-click on the database icon and click "Properties".
Check the box "Reference DB".
Click on "OK"
Once you have performed this step, this database will be used by the program as a "reference", so to speak. You can see a simple example of this, for example, if you replay a game in the board window and then click on the "Reference" button.
The program automatically performs the corresponding search in the reference database and offers the user a wealth of information on the current variation with just one click.
This is of course only one of the numerous possibilities of the program, which require a well sorted reference database. For the ChessBase beginner it is important to know that it is essential to define a well sorted database as reference.
