Correcting games

Answer

When you take in whole tournaments or receive a collection of games, it is possible to isolate wrongly recorded games with the help of the search mask. In ChessBase the search mask offers the opportunity to search for games with specific results. Let us assume we are looking for games which end in stalemate (thus drawn), but the result in the database does not indicate a draw.

To do so, in the search mask under the heading Game data we go to the section for Results and tick the boxes for “1-0”, “0-1” and “Stalemate”. Alternatively the search for games which end or could end in mate, but where the result is given as a draw, is also well suited for the detection of potentially wrongly recorded games within a database.

Let us take an example:

This position was reached after White’s 63rd move. It is not difficult to recognise that the position is totally drawn. So here the result could be wrong. It is not clear why the person who recorded the game entered the result as 0:1. It is impossible to now establish the result without the original scoresheet. For that reason it is recommended that you investigate the data for such errors by using the search mask while the tournament is still in progress.
