The ECO classification

Answer

In the search mask in Fritz or ChessBase you will find among other things the option to target your search according to “ECO”. This abbreviation stands for “Encyclopedia of Chess Openings”.

This is a reference work and recognised classification system of the Chess Informant for openings. The individual variations are described by abbreviations such as, e.g., “C43” (Petroff with 3.d4) or “D89” (Grünfeld Defence Exchange Main line).

For many decades this system has been the international standard for a systematic description of the chess openings. This is why it is employed in Fritz and ChessBase. All the games we publish contain the correct ECO code in their specification. If you play or analyse a game with Fritz the correct ECO entry is automatically entered when you save it.

In the search mask you can limit your search for games with the help of the ECO codes. To do so, call up the checkbox and enter an ECO defined area for your search.

Beispiele:

"C"         looks for all those games which are contained between C00 and C99 entsprechen.

"C43"    looks for all games between C43/00 andC43/99

"C43-C45"           looks for all games from C43/00 to C45/99

You will find the classification file in the program’s directory. The following screenshot highlights in colour the relevant classification file in the Fritz directory.
