Constructing a repertoire

Answer

The Openings App offers the user a particularly easy way to manage his or her own repertoire. One advantage consists above all in the fact that there is no need for a tedious inputting of variations when extending the repertoires. All that is required is that you simply highlight the desired moves which you yourself play. When you are in the App any relevant move can simply be chosen with a right click in Live Book or via “Mark move”.

The screenshot shows you how right clicking can include the King’s Gambit in your White repertoire.

Important note for understanding this. Whenever you highlight a move the whole variation is included in your repertoire. Clicks on moves by White relate to your White repertoire, moves by Black go into your Black repertoire.

Moreover, this procedure is generally implemented in many Apps, e.g. when accessing the Live Database or the cloud with your own games!

Using the App is useful above all when you are away from home and would like to fine tune or add to your repertoire with your smart phone or tablet. You also need to bear in mind that you can always manage you repertoire at home by using ChessBase/Fritz on your computer.  Live Book is always displayed in Fritz/ChessBase, so with a permanent login you can also always transfer from the Windows programmes to your repertoire with a right click!

Within Live Book  all highlighted moves are marked with an * , and especially important moves with **. All variations which lead to moves marked by the user can be recognised within Live Book by the different colours with which they are highlighted.

Moves highlighted in blue indicate they belong to the White repertoire, those in green the Black repertoire. All variations which are designated in Live Book with** as being particularly important are displayed as main variations in the repertoire overview!

The App is also especially useful to the user when the latter wishes to obtain as quickly as possible an overview of a new opening system or to extend his repertoire with new opening systems.

Theoretical overview

In the Live Book window there are two other tabs which direct those users interested in openings to access to complete opening surveys for the most important opening systems.

These surveys are extremely useful for the learning of new openings. For club players, generally speaking it is enough to have some knowledge of the most important main lines. Each of the repertoires on offer can be tailored to suit and adapted to your own needs. This can be done via the buttons at the bottom of the window.

The following two screenshots show the display of the opening overview for the Scandinavian with the settings for “Beginner” and “Master“.

Try it yourself and at first glance you will recognise the difference in what is presented.  With the settings “Easy” and “Club” the repertoires are laid out clearly and these settings are on offer for when you want to obtain a quick overview of an opening system. Each repertoire is laid out clearly either for White or for Black. For that colour there is a move which is clearly best, and all others are ignored.

Where possible all opening overviews quote at the end of the variation a strong recent game. A click on the “Live Book” tab, then on “Update list”, and usually this game will be at the top of the search results so that you can play in through in its entirety straight away!

The “Tournament” setting is above all designed for players who know their openings really well and just want to get a survey of recent trends in theory. In combination with the functions “Autoplay” and “Guess variation” these detailed repertoires provide a solid basis for the spotting of recent theoretical trends and for learning the openings.

Tip: The setting “Easy” can be used with an unregistered guest account, all the other settings require a registered account and “Tournament” and “Master” are exclusively available to those who have a Premium Account.

The opening surveys at “Master” level are extensive and very deeply complex. Just like in a self-created repertoire, this setting incorporates deep analyses. For that reason, the notation is provided with a display option to fold, meaning that with a single click whole systems can be collapsed in the notation window in order to show a better overview. It is particularly practical to be able to fold away out of sight with a double click all those variations outwith the move order being examined. This makes it possible to handle even gigantic variation trees flexibly.

Below the notation there are two buttons for that: the microscope brings into focus the current move order and packs the rest away. The trident unfolds all the variations. A second click on the trident, moreover, removes the button for folding.
