Komodo 13 and Monte Carlo

Answer

Question: I have purchased Komodo 13 and would like to make use of the “Monte Carlo” analysis function. Every time I try to start the said function, I get the lapidary announcement that the function is not supported.

Why does the analysis not work?

Answer:  The analysis function “Monte Carlo” which is on offer in the user interface is at present supported exclusively in the Fritz 16 engine and the Rybka engines. The developers of the Komodo 13 engine have misleadingly also named their new search function “Monte Carlo”.

Inspired by AlphaZero the Komodo developers GM Larry Kaufman and Mark Lefler have come up with a basic new conception for their engine in the last two years. The result speaks for itself: the new Komodo 13 MCTS (“Monte Carlo Tree Search”) seeks candidate moves in an incredibly innovative way and finds solutions which hardly any other engine stumbles upon.

Komodo 13 analyses in a different way from all other chess programs. Their further development of the MCTS technique works particularly well in combination with “multiple variation mode”.

On standard computers, which have several CPUs, Komodo 13 MCTS is the ideal engine for all analyses involving two or more variations. Over and above that, Komodo 13 distinguishes itself with a very human  component: in level positions, in which other engines simply throw up “0.00” as an evaluation, Komodo looks at things in greater depth. The engine gives a preference to the side which has the easier game and, e.g., does not still have to find a series of difficult moves.
