Powerbook tip

Answer

The Powerbook contains a position tree with far more than 21 million opening positions. The basis for what is in the opening tree is an up-to-date database of over 1.5 million games! That gives us a detailed overview of the most recent state of opening theory.

The transparent structure of the format of the tree with its numerous embedded statistics makes an evaluation of questions related to opening theory especially simple. In combination with Fritz & Co or ChessBase you can check at any time with a click of the mouse whether a specific position has already been seen in practice and what chances of success are offered by individual continuations.

When using it with the chess programs you can link the position tree directly to a database and in addition to the statistical information from the tree you can immediately filter out from the database the relevant games in an opening variation for comparison. To do so you load with Fritz & Co both the Powerbook 2018 and the database which comes with it. Whenever you want to see and compare games which are relevant to an interesting position all it takes is a right click in the book window.

Search games immediately lists all games in which the current position on the board can be found. This allows you to use the comparable games to work out which typical strategies have been employed in the selected opening.

No database is included with the specialised  Powerbooks.

But if you have a database of us (the chess programs come with a large database!), you can easily find the matching comparison games with the method described above.
