With Fritz or ChessBase you can annotate games with variations and text. Support keeps on being asked by users why text commentary they entered themselves has suddenly disappeared or is not being displayed. To understand the problem, let us take a look at the window in which text commentary is entered.
Next to the area for the input of text comments you will find several tabs. These buttons are used to specify the language for the display of the text commentary.
“English” for textual comments in English, “Deutsch” for text commentary in German, etc.. The text commentary is only shown when the user has activated within the program the language settings which are described below.
If the text commentary is put under “All” it will always be displayed – no matter what language settings have been chosen by the user. You confirm your comments with a click on OK.
The reason for the “disappearing” game annotations finally becomes clear whenever you check the settings under Options – Language.
In the screenshot “Deutsch” has been chosen as the first language and ,” English” as the second one. If with the mouse you tick on the button “One” only those comments which have been recorded by the user under “Program language”will be displayed. “Both” shows comments in the two languages chosen, whilst “All” arranges for all commentary to be displayed – no matter in which language it is.
So, missing text commentary is almost always the result of wrong settings. If the text is input in the space reserved for a language which has not been activated for the program as a whole it will not be displayed. The safest way to avoid problems is simply to activate the button for “All”.
