UCI engines low priority

Answer

Our chess programs are conceived as  multi-engine-systems and allow the incorporation of various chess engines. The graphics and the actual chess program are strictly separate one from the other and communicate through a predefined interface. A great number of chess engines are able to be downloaded from the internet which communicate with the user interface via  UCI Protocol. UCI stands for Universal Chess Interface and was developed by Stefan Meyer-Kahlen.

Fritz & Co support engines which work with the UCI Protocol and can be incorporated by means of the Fritz GUI. On the internet you will find numerous UCI engines.

On the menu Engine – Create UCI engine you can start the dialog to incorporate the UCI engine.

The integration takes place via a self-explanatory dialog.

The program first needs to “know”, where the incorporated UCI engine is to be saved on the computer. Using the “Browse” button you can use the mouse to simply indicate a path to the engine.

One important detail: the UCI engine can be saved in any path or folder you wish.

After the pathway has been entered, you will see that in the dialog boxes “Name” and “Author” the name of the engine and that of its author are automatically included. In addition the button “Parameter” allows you to make changes to the standard settings for the engine.

What is the meaning of “Priority – Below normal”?

What this is about is the attribution of calculating time. Communication between the graphics and the chess engine is carried out via a separate program, the engine interface. The interface has lower priority so as to allow a maximum of resources to the running chess engine. Many UCI engines have problems with their default settings whenever because of a lack of resources the interface was unable to directly take on board the evaluations and other information. The setting “Priority – Below normal” allows, e.g., display problems with UCI engines to be remedied.

Even with low priority the actual UCI engine receives the appropriate calculating time and performs to the full. Do the setting has no negative effect on the performance of a UCI Engine! That can easily be checked by analysing the same position with both settings at on/off. The setting has practically no effect on the speed; it is all about a smoother operation.
