3/7/2024 – The sixth edition of the Prague Chess Festival came to an end in the capital of the Czech Republic. Nodirbek Abdusattorov had already secured tournament victory in the Masters after the penultimate round. Meanwhile, the Challengers saw Ediz Gurel, aged 15, beating Anton Korobov to win the tournament outright. 3/6/2024 – Nodirbek Abdusattorov bounced back from his round-6 loss by beating Vincent Keymer at the Masters section of the Prague Chess Festival. Thus, Abdusattorov continues to be the sole leader with two rounds to go. Parham Maghsoodloo got the better of Vidit and now stands in sole second place. In the all-Indian confrontation between Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh (pictured), the latter escaped with a draw in a 91-move game. 2/27/2024 – Lela Javakhishvili emerged as the winner of the Georgian Women’s Championship 2024. One of the most successful Georgian chess players, Lela clinched her fifth national title. As is often the case in Georgian Women’s championships, it was a very close race among the top-rated players and the members of the very strong national team. Nino Batsiashvili and Meri Arabidze finished in second and third place, respectively.
2/25/2024 – MegaBase 2024 is Chess History in action. Regularly updated every month, the Main Database currently offers 10.6 million games, many of them annotated. In the first part of his review he dealt with the treatment of chess in the 21st Century in the MegaBase. Here he offers a rare discovery from a world championship match that fell into oblivion.
2/23/2024 – Around the turn of the century, there was worldwide interest regarding chess confrontations between humans and computers. One of the last top-notch events featuring such a battle was seen in 2005, when three strong grandmasters played a match against three of the best engines in the world. In the end, Hydra, Junior and Fritz defeated Alexander Khalifman, Ruslan Ponomariov and Rustam Kasimdzhanov by an 8-4 score. The match took place in Bilbao, and saw Ponomariov beating Fritz in a memorable encounter.
2/21/2024 – The 1959 Candidates Tournament saw an inspired Mikhail Tal emerging victorious with 20/28 points in a quadruple round-robin. On his way to victory, Tal, aged 22 at the time, defeated Bobby Fischer, aged 16, in all four of their confrontations. GM Daniel King analysed one of these games, where Tal fearlessly grabs material, allowing Fischer to create a dangerous attack. The game, along with Daniel King’s voice-over, was featured in an animation produced by Umang Mankodiya.
2/18/2024 – Today’s column is about sacrifices and the exchange in particular. If you’re shown a chess position cold, then the first thing you do normally is to count the pieces just to check that the material is fairly balanced. But the relative activity is at least as important. 2/3/2024 – Three out of four quarter-finals favoured the lower-rated contender in Division I of the Chessable Masters. Denis Lazavik beat Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Jose Martinez beat Ian Nepomniachtchi and Vladimir Fedoseev beat Alireza Firouzja. 2/1/2024 – The first event of the Champions Chess Tour kicked off on Wednesday. A 9-round Swiss open featuring over 200 players saw Peruvian GM Jose Martinez claiming first place on tiebreaks after scoring as many points as Spanish GM David Anton. Remarkably, Martinez, an online-chess specialist, outscored the likes of Hikaru Nakamura and Alireza Firouzja on his 25th birthday.
