New: Sergei Tiviakov - The Art of the Positional Exchange Sacrifice

by Johannes Fischer
1/31/2017 – "The positional exchange sacrifice is one of the most powerful and fascinating strategic weapons in chess," states Sergei Tiviakov on his new ChessBase DVD "The Art of the Positional Exchange Sacrifice". Modern practice supports this claim. In a recent game between Levon Aronian and Anish Giri, played in round 8 of the Tata Steel tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Giri misjudged the consequences of an exchange sacrifice by Aronian and lost without much of a fight.

The positional exchange sacrifice is one of the most powerful and fascinating strategic weapons in chess. On this DVD Sergey Tiviakov explains why the positional exchange sacrifice is such a strong weapon and how to use it.

Extending the "Art of" series:

Anish Giri does not lose often but he found no antidote to Levon Aronian's positional exchange sacrifice from Tata Steel Chess, 2017.

Giri certainly saw the exchange sacrifice White tried in the game but perhaps underestimated its strength. 11.bxa3 Nd6 12.c5 Nc4
That was Black's idea. 13.Rxc4! The black knight on c4 is very strong and the exchange sacrifice suggests itself. White eliminates Black's strongest piece and gets active play and lots of pressure for his material investment. dxc4 14.Qc2 h6 15.Qxc4 b6 16.Bf4 Re8 17.Bd6 Bb7 18.Ne5 bxc5 19.dxc5 Nxe5 20.Bxe5 One knight was exchanged but Black still has problems to free his position. In the further course of the game White provokes weaknesses on Black's kingside to prepare a kingside attack. a5 21.Rb1 Ra7 After 21...Ba6 22.Qc2 Qd7 23.Rb6 Rec8 24.a4 Black's white-sqared bishop is still shut out. 22.Qc3 f6 23.Bd6 Ba8 24.Be4 f5 25.Bc2 Rb7 26.Rd1 Rd7 27.e4 White is an exchange down but calmly builds up an attack. Qf6 28.Qc4 Kh8 29.Re1 Qf7 30.Qd3 f4 31.gxf4! e5 32.Qh3! Rxd6 Black also resorts to an exchange sacrifice but it is much less effective than White's sacrifice on move 13. According to the engines Black is already lost here - and after 32...exf4 33.e5 White has too many threats. 33.cxd6 Qg6+ 34.Qg3 Qxd6 35.Rd1 Qc5 36.Rd7 Black is helpless against White's attack - the bishop on a8 can just watch how the white pieces invade Black's position.
