Sac, sac,... mate!

by ChessBase
5/3/2021 – The title comes from Bobby Fischer's description of how he handles the Dragon, and is quite appropriate for the game presented here. In a classic Keres Attack, with just seven moves given to them, Fat Fritz 2 and a top-notch Leela duke it out on powerful hardware. White builds up a massive position and then starts dropping bombs. Don't miss this spectacular game!

It isn't often that two engines will play out a game in with a spectacular piece sacrifice, never mind two of them in a row. Especially when played in relatively long games on high-end hardware, yet such was the case here.

Fat Fritz 2 was playing on an i9-10980ex, while Leela, using the J94-100 net in the new and very fast Ceres binary, ran on a dual GPU rig with an RTX 3080 and an RTX 2070.

The game starts with a basic Keres Attack in which Fat Fritz 2 deviates from the most popular continuation with 10.Rg3!?

According to MegaDatabase 2021, it is the second most played with 10.Qh5 enjoying the lion's share of the games in this line. Bear in mind the two engines are following a famous 1978 encounter between GM Byrne and Spassky, as well as Speelman-Ivanchuk in 1990.

White clearly has several promising options, but that is what makes it hard. f4, or h4 certainly seem inviting, not to mention White's choice of 12.0-0-0. Play continued 12...b5 13.f4! Rb8 14.f5! with a perfectly logical approach.

Still, after 15.Ne2 Re8 16.fxe6 fxe6 17.Nf4 Ne5 18.Kb1 a5 an interesting situation presented itself.

After nearly two billion nodes, Fat Fritz 2 chose 19.Nh5!

19.Bc4 and 19.Be2 were also serious candidates. The build-up is huge. Can Black parry White's threats? The answer comes very soon after 19...Rf8 20.Be2 Bb7 21.g6 h6

Here White struck with great verve: 22.Nxg7!!, and after 22...Kxg7 White struck again!

Black is given no time to breathe and is bombed again with 23.Bxh6!!

Now the position soon collapses with some precise blows after 23...Kxh6 24.g7! Rf4 25.g8N+ Qxg8 26.Rxg8 Rxg8

With 27.Qa7! Black loses a bishop and the rest is just the mop-up.
