Newly reviewed: Endgame Academy Part 1 – Checkmate & Pawn Endgames

by Michael Kotyk
6/1/2025 – When it comes to endgames, there's nobody better than Karsten Müller. Michael Kotyk, the young Hamburg chess trainer, knows this well. He's taken out his magnifying glass and dedicated himself to Müller's latest work: His endgame courses are ChessBase classics. The most recent edition also employs the interactive options that have become indispensable in video courses. The new edition of the Endgame Academy kicks off with Checkmate & Pawn Endgames.

From Mating with a queen; a rook; two bishops; a knight and a bishop; to the basics of pawn endgames – here you will gain the necessary know-how to turn your endgame advantages into victories!

In many chess games, pawn endgames determine victory or defeat, but systematic instruction to truly understand the subtle differences is often lacking. This course addresses this very point, and is aimed at anyone who wants to specifically expand their knowledge of pawn endgames, whether they're ambitious club players or enthusiastic amateurs. Anyone who wants to take the decisive step in the endgame has come to the right place. I particularly liked the combination of concise videos and relevant interactive exercises. Not only are the lessons explained, but what they teach can be quickly applied to practical tasks.

Combination of theory and practice

A real highlight is the combination of theory and practice. You quickly realise that the content can have real added value and make the difference in your own game. Especially in typical pawn endgames, you learn that it's often the nuances that determine between a win and a draw. This motivates you, and gives you the feeling of becoming more confident step by step.
A very good example is the lesson on opposition and critical squares. It impressively demonstrates how you can achieve the better king position with minimal resources, and thus find the correct decisive move.

Black is to move in the game Todorovic,R – Andersen,A (6th ch-Cent SRB Int 2013 Paracin SRB). Where should the black king move?

66...Ke7! White cannot win because his king cannot reach the c4-square, and he is denied access to the f5-square.
[66...Ke6? 67.Ke4 Kd6 68.Kf5 Ke7 69.Kg6 Ke6 70.Kxh6 Kf7 71.Kh7+-;
66...Kd6? 67.Kd4 Ke6 68.Kc5 Ke5 (68...f5 69.gxf5+ Kxf5 70.Kxb5 Kg5 71.Kc4 Kxh5 72.b5+-) 69.Kxb5 Kf4 70.Kc5 Kxg4 71.b5 f5 72.b6 f4 73.b7 f3 74.b8Q+-]
67.Kd4 Kd6 68.Ke4 Ke6 69.Kf4 Ke7 70.Kf3 Kd6 71.Ke4 Ke6 72.Kd4 Kd6 73.Ke4 Ke6 74.Kf4 Ke7 75.Kf5 Kf7 76.Ke4 Ke6 ½-½

Another good example is the issue of distant passed pawns. Knowing the right plans here can give you a decisive advantage in many endgames.

I particularly like Karsten Müller's presentation style. He manages to present a topic that's often perceived as dry in an engaging and vivid way. His explanations are clear, the structure is coherent, and learning the pawn endgame becomes fun. Anyone who has previously avoided this area of chess might discover a new passion here!

A good example of the quality of the course is this free sample video on the topic of “Development into a Pawn Endgame”.

Practical benefits

Once you've experienced how a seemingly lost position can suddenly be transformed into a salvageable endgame position through complex calculations, it becomes clear why this training is so worthwhile.
The interactive exercises are extremely helpful, and you're constantly presented with new challenges. The mix of teaching material and practical exercises ensures that you can immediately put what you've learned to use. This means that the acquired knowledge is no longer theoretical and abstract, but can serve as a guide in your own games. Personally, after applying the concepts taught over time, I noticed a significant improvement in my own endgame technique. Anyone who hasn't felt entirely confident in such endgame sections will find coherent and practical instructions here to help you navigate them confidently.

In over 4 hours in front of the camera, Karsten Müller presents to you sensations from the world of endgames - partly reaching far beyond standard techniques and rules of thumb - and rounds off with some cases of with own examples.

Conclusion

The course is aimed at beginners in endgame training and experienced players who want to intensify or refresh their knowledge. The systematic structure of the course allows those who are passionate about certain topics and want to work through them effectively to do so. Anyone who tackles the training will succeed, regardless of whether they choose specific areas, or follow through with everything: the learning effect is long-lasting.
The course offers a clear, easy-to-understand, practical introduction to the topic of pawn endgames. Even I, as a club player with an Elo rating of 2200, was able to discover a few gems here. Many interactive exercises further consolidate the acquired knowledge. Anyone who wants to take their endgame to the next level will find a powerful tool here. All in all, a well-thought-out course, suitable for both endgame novices and experienced players. Anyone who wants to truly understand the intricacies of pawn endgames shouldn't miss this course!
