As a chess player I grew up on different versions of ChessBase and Mega Database. I never really dabbled into the world of Fritz software. Although I knew that it was mainly a playing program, I never took it seriously. Why would anyone want to play against an engine was my thought.

It surprised me always that one of the best selling products of ChessBase has always been Fritz. When people come and ask me what exactly are the features of it, I was not 100% comfortable. And so I decided to spend a day with my Fritz 17 software. I wanted to check as to what was it that Fritz 17 had in it that ChessBase + Mega Database did not.

You can check out my findings in the video below:

There are some really amazing features which the users would love! I would break them up into ten different points:

  1. This is a self contained software that comes with its own user interface, engine, database and openings book.
  2. Fritz 17 also now comes with the powerful AI engine Fat Fritz
  3. Ability to play at different levels against the engine
  4. It has special features to improve your blindfold thinking in chess
  5. The ability to indulge in deep game analysis
  6. Tremendous number of opening features, the biggest ones being standard repertoires of all openings offered
  7. Adding new engines, "Let's Check" feature, engine matches and cloud engines
  8. Ray Tracing ability to give you life-like 3D chess boards
  9. Training your endgames with a fixed set of theoretical positions against Fritz
  10. Six months of complete access to the ChessBase Premium Account

We hope you enjoy Fritz 17!

I feel in the next release (Fritz 18), they should include an option to open ebook (may be in pdf format) to open in the notation area so that one can study ebooks with a board.
