Gawain must have had something in mind, but I am not sure what. As far as I can see, this move simply loses a pawn. [Gawain's Grand Prix Attack had yielded no advantage, but he would not be worse after a moce such as 18.b3 Instead, he had what looks like a rush of blood.]
