Game of the Week #586

This weekend the Dutch League started again. With my hometown team, AMEVO Apeldoorn, we are defending champions, as we won the league in the past two years.

The two other favourites, LSG (Leiden) and Kennemer Combinatie (Haarlem), were paired in the very first round and after a tough battle, tied their match 5-5. The game from the top board impressed me, as Liam Vrolijk keeps making a lot of progress recently and produced a pretty game against Robin Swinkels.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
