Game of the Week #574

The Global Chess League is taking place in Dubai, a super-strong rapid event, and several instructive games could have qualified for our Game of the Week, but in the end it was a fine performance by Anand who won an impressive technical game with the Ruy Lopez against the super-expert Aronian.

The most successful interpretation of the Ruy Lopez seems to be to avoid any sharp counterplay from Black and to aim for full control of the position. Anand shows how it's done.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
