Game of the Week #545

Merijn Van Delft: "Right now I'm playing the Benidorm Open, which is a lovely and very well organised tournament in Spain. Playing circumstances are fantastic and everything is taken care of. Several young talents are participating, which I experienced myself in the second round when I was outplayed by 13-year-old Sohum Lohia from England.

This provides us with some instructive points about Hedgehog positions."

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
