Game of the Week #504

The new season of the online Meltwater Champions Chess Tour has started. The first event is the Airthings Masters, with preliminary and knockout stages. The lineup is incredibly strong, as Aronian and Giri failed to get through and Kosteniuk only scored one win and lost her remaining games, while Hansen and Keymer impressively qualified.

Nepomniachtchi recovered from his deafeat at the World Championship match by winning the preliminaries by a wide margin and beating Carlsen with the black pieces in the process.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
