Game of the Week #492: Max Warmerdam vs Hing Ting Lai

by Merijn van Delft
12/1/2021 – This week, Merijn van Delft takes a look at a game from the Dutch Championship, in which Max Warmerdam outplayed his opponent Hing Ting Lai convincingly. Warmerdam is not only a strong player, but he also worked as a second for Jorden Van Foreest at the Wijk aan Zee tournament 2021, and helped Van Foreest to surprisingly win this prestigious event. | Merijn’s show is available on-demand with a ChessBase Premium Account. Game of the Week #492

The World Championship match between Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi has begun and even though all four games played ended in a draw, the chess is very interesting and it feels that something dramatic can happen at any time.

Since we all follow these games very closely, I thought that it might be interesting to select a game from the Dutch Championship instead.

Max Warmerdam is leading the Final Four halfway through and we'll study his crucial game against Hing Ting Lai.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

Practical Chess Strategy: The Bishop

When it comes to strategy, one of the key things that chess professionals understand much better than amateur players is the role of the bishop which is the key theme on this video course.

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
