Very often a new version of a chess program is soon followed
by another corrected/improved (?) version. Sometimes the official name isn't
changed and sometimes it's called X.1 or something similar. In SSDF we have
usually upgraded to the new version, but often the results of the older and
newer programs have been mixed and presented under the same name. Sometimes
we have time to restart the testing.
When Steen Suurballe provided a corrected version of his program,
we decided to stop testing Gandalf 5.0 after about 200 games, and instead
played with Gandalf 5.1 Athlon 1200 MHz. Now we have reached 595 tournament
games, and it has a rating of 2646. That is only four points more than v.
5.0 has. The conclusion is that we cannot demonstrate any difference between
the strengths of the two program versions.
Another new program is Fritz 7.0 (7.0.0.6) K6-2 450 MHz. Whereas
Fritz 7 on A1200 is 16 points above Deep Fritz, on this slower hardware the
situation is reversed. Fritz 7 has 21 points less than DF and has a rating
of 2631.
We have played 124 games with the UCI-version of Shredder 6.0
K6-2 450 MHz, using the opening book of Sandro Necchi. So far the rating is
2630. With so few games it's difficult to draw any conclusions concerning
which opening book Shredder 6.0 might benefit most from.
Fritz 7.0 A1200 is still leading, but has lost 18 points since
March 27. The two Tiger-versions have gained 8 and 12 points respectively.
Shredder 6.0 has six points more, Junior 7.0 nine more points and Shredder
5.32 has added eight points.
We have now started to play with the Paderborn-version of Shredder
6.0. When ChessBase sends us Hiarcs 8.0, we will immediately start to test
it.
Next list will appear in early July.
