1/28/2018 – Magnus Carlsen won the 80th Tata Steel Masters which was decided in a blitz tiebreak over Dutch number one Anish Giri. The players contested two blitz games with 5 minutes plus 3 seconds per move, with no sudden death Armageddon game needed. Tiebreak

The time control is 5 minutes plus 3 seconds per move for the entire game. Two blitz games will be played, and if tied, a single sudden-death ("Armageddon") game, in which black has draw odds, but starts with one minute less.

I think when Giri was younger I used to find him arrogant. Over the last few years, I have found him to be charismatic, talented and good humoured. If I compare him to myself at the same age - he'd make better company and be interesting, well rounded company. I hope he finds that next level that is required to win competitions like this on a regular basis.

And, personally, I found the Mamedyarov / Carlsen game quite interesting ; we musn't forget that, until now, Mamedyarov, had quite a lot of problems playing Carlsen (1 win for 5 losses with 7 draws in classical, if I didn't miss anything, Mamedyarov's only win against Carlsen being, furthermore, 10 years old...) ; I don't think that, taking this into account, Mamedyarov's first goal, for his first classical game against Carlsen as a 2800+ player, was to win their game ; much more probably, he wants to find a way to play against Carlsen, and to stop the current trend (...Mamedyarov's 5 last classical games against Carlsen were 4 losses with only 1 draw). And in this last game, he managed quite satisfyingly to do this... So I found this game quite interesting to follow...

Just found it out: 10K for 1st (masters group). The prizes do not seem to be large. So, besides prestige, whats the main motivation for the players to be in Wijk aan Zee for such a long tournament? Do they get really good image rights? Is their stay paid by the organizers? Just curious.

A good example for motivation by human Grandmaster Analysis: The Round up show from Simon W of round 5. Very intersting, entertaining, makes fun for me to improve my chess with training in future. Even so exiting that I switch from my German to my rusty English!

We have seen the last decades a dramatic increase of the engine strength. However at the same time there hasn't happened any serious development for the automated game annotations. Despite all fuss about AI this is a domain where we are still nowhere. Nonetheless getting high quality automated game annotations would definitely be a game-changer. Many players today have no idea how to properly annotate their games.

GM Robin and FM Tex is a very exciting commentary combo. Compelling and holding the audiences I think, with fine, tight, even fierce chat of the 'give us some more' variety!!
