Romanian Kings Tournament celebrates national centenary

by ChessBase
11/7/2018 – The annual Kings Tournament which, since last year, is held "in memoriam Elisabeta Polihroniade" is now in its 12th Edition. This time the tournament takes place solely in Bucharest from November 19th-21st. It will be an all-Romanian tournament — including players from the Romanian diaspora — in celebration of the country's centenary — December 1st marks 100 years after Unification Day, a holiday born in 1990 but referring to the unification of the provinces which occurred in 1918 in the aftermath of the First World War.

Drawing of lots and tiebreaks

Romanian chess federation logoFor the round-robin events, the following procedure will take place: the 4 players (in descending order, from highest rated to lowest rated) will draw the starting numbers. In the Blitz event, the players will maintain their order but will inverse the colors in comparison to the Rapid event. Through this system all players will play 9 rounds with the white pieces, and 9 rounds with the black pieces.

For each tournament (A and B) if two or more players finish with the same number of points, the placement in the final standings will be determined by application of the following tie-breaking procedures in sequence to the extent required:

  1. Results of the direct encounters between the tied players
  2. The greater number of wins
  3. Sonneborn-Berger tie-break

The chief arbiter is IA Faiq Gasanov, the Deputy arbiter is IA Radu-Cătălin Chirilă and the tournament director is Dan Gabăr.
