The only draw of round eight occurred in the game between Jürgen Teufel and Wolfgang Unzicker who discussed a line of the Spanish Exchange Variation.
Before the round, Paul Keres and Borislav Ivkov shared the lead with 5½/7 each and this made their game the top encounter of the round. Ivkov had Black and went for the French in which he soon had to defend an isolated queen pawn on d5. However, Ivkov failed to create enough counterplay to compensate for his weaknesses and finally lost the pawn and the game.

The talented Helmut Pfleger is an amateur and studies medicine but he still has good chances to become Grandmaster. However, in his game against World Champion Tigran Petrosian he suffered a setback.
38.Rb8 g6 38...Bd7 was the better alternative. 39.Bd3 Rc5 39...Rc7!? 40.Kh2 Ne6 41.Bb5 Now Black loses the pawn on a4 and the game is practically over. 41...Nc7 42.Bxa4 Kh7 43.Bxe8 Nxe8 44.Qb4 White gradually increases the pressure. 44...Nc7 45.Rb7 Kg7 46.g3 Qf8 47.Qb6 Qe7 48.Kg2 d4

The shortest game of the round was the encounter between Andreas Dückstein and Heikki Westerinen. In a line of the Alekhine the Austrian grabbed a pawn an a7 which, however, turned out to be a mistake.
Black now played 16.Rxa7 and White resigned. After 18.Qxa7 Bf8 the long diagonal turns out to be fatal for White.
The game between Hans-Günter Kestler and Klaus Klundt lasted only a bit longer.
Black's set-up is less than ideal and White quickly outplays him on the queenside. 21.Ra1 Rxa1 22.Rxa1 Ne6 22...Ne8 to defend d6 was slightly better. 23.Ra8 Qc7 24.Nc4 Attacking d6. 24...Nd4 25.Ba5 What to do with the queen? 25...Qd7 26.Nb6 Qe6 27.Ncd5 Now Black loses a piece. 1–0 This was Kestler's first win.
Milko Bobotsov won against Jan Hein Donner and Lothar Schmid won against Roman Toran.
