The Hoogeveen Chess Festival 2019 is dedicated to youth. Alireza Firouzja (16) and Jorge Cori (24) compete against each other. The third young player is Zhanzaya Abdumalik (19). She plays in the battle of the sexes and the generations against the veteran Jan Timman (67). The former World Championship candidate, born in 1951, represents great chess understanding and a huge amount of experience.
The competitions are embedded alongside three open tournaments. In addition to two amateur opens a Master Open is on offer where GMs Roeland Pruissers and Jan Werle are the top seets. Almost 80 players join them.
