Scarcely any world champion has managed to captivate chess lovers to the extent Carlsen has. The enormously talented Norwegian hasn't been systematically trained within the structures of a major chess-playing nation such as Russia, the Ukraine or China.
Happy new year everyone! Tonight we'll start the new year by looking back at the World Rapid and Blitz Championship. Magnus Carlsen managed to win both tournaments and now holds all titles. The world's undisputed number one played smoothly, only losing one game (with black in blitz against Andreikin) along the way. We will look at Aronian-Carlsen from the rapid, and surely there is more, in case we have time left.
