January 2018 FIDE Ratings: Green and evergreen

by ChessBase
1/3/2018 – It was a great month to end the year, with exciting chess throughout. Fabiano Caruana retook the no.2 spot after his win at London, but the biggest news was really Vishy Anand's evergreen result, taking the World Rapid title at age 48, facing a player less than half his age, albeit a bit green in tournament strategy, 22-year-old Vladimir Fedoseev. Let's not forget Magnus Carlsen who took the World Blitz title, and many more results. | Photo: Anastasia Karlovich

Top climbers and descenders

Ian Nepomniachtchi really had a remarkable month. And a frustrating one to a degree. In the London Chess Classic he had one of the results of his career, when he not only beat Magnus Carlsen in their game, but tied for first. This earned him 22 Elo, making him also the biggest ratings earner in the month. So why would this be frustrating? Because he actually scored two huge ties for first, in both the London Classic, and later in the month in a 3-way tie in the World Rapid. Both times he missed out on clinching gold. Nevertheless, a shout out to him for his great results.

FIDE Top 100 Women

There wasn't a lot of action for the women in classical chess in December. World number one Hou Yifan was inactive at the chess board, but recently was featured by CNN and decided to matriculate to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar next Autumn.

FIDE Top 100 Juniors

There were a few notable gains in the month, such as Iran's Alireza Firouzja, who moved to 2549 at just 14 years of age, and Indian Aravindh Chithambaram, who cracked 2600, but what stands out are some of the overall statistics. As of January 1st, the two countries with the most players in the Top 100 Juniors are the USA and India with 12 players, followed by Russia with 11. However, can you guess who is fourth in the list? China? Hungary? Ukraine? Nope. It is Iran with seven players!

Top 100 Rapid

Needless to say, December was dominated by the five days of thrilling competition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for the World Rapid and World Blitz Championships. There were a number of notable names and results, but here are the most obvious ones:

Vladimir Fedoseev has had a breakthrough year in 2017. There is no other way of describing it. The 22-year-old Russian was delight to spectators with his no-holds-barred brand of chess. This came with a price, no question, but what fun! He started the year with 2658 Elo in classical chess, and is now 2724 and clearly on the rise. In Rapid it was even more dramatic as he moved from the middle of the pack to world number four as he stormed the World Rapid and took second after losing a playoff to Vishy Anand.

Take note also of his younger colleague, 19-year-old Vladislav Artemiev who also showed inordinate speed chess ability and who gained 80 FIDE Rapid Elo to move to number fifteen.

And what can one say that has note been said? The evergreen Vishy Anand once more silenced his doubters by following up a last place in the London Classic with a World Rapid title, making him the oldest winner in history at age 48.

My Career Vol. 1

The first DVD with videos from Anand's chess career reflects the very beginning of that career and goes as far as 1999. It starts with his memories of how he first learned chess and shows his first great games (including those from the 1984 WCh for juniors). The high point of his early developmental phase was the winning of the 1987 WCh for juniors. After that, things continue in quick succession: the first victories over Kasparov, WCh candidate in both the FIDE and PCA cycles and the high point of the WCh match against Kasparov in 1995.

Top 100 Blitz

It was an amazing comeback as Magnus Carlsen seemed headed towards another disappointing result after a lackluster Day One at the World Blitz, but a monster run on Day Two secured him the World title with a round to spare. Even though he did lose around 20 FIDE Blitz points, as a result of having such an absurdly high blitz rating, he is still a massive 97 points head of his nearest rival.

Master Class Vol.8: Magnus Carlsen

Scarcely any world champion has managed to captivate chess lovers to the extent Carlsen has. The enormously talented Norwegian hasn't been systematically trained within the structures of a major chess-playing nation such as Russia, the Ukraine or China.

Sergey Karjakin expereinced a bit of the reverse, as he steamrolled the first day, and seemed headed to a comfortable title defense (he was the 2016 champion). Things went south on Day Two, but he shoed grit as he fought back and managed to get silver.

Women's Top 50 Blitz

30-year-old Nana Dzagnidze was a model of consistency as she wiped away the competition, and just like Carlsen won the World Blitz title a full round in advance. She not only gained 127 Elo, but is now the top-rated woman in blitz. Hou Yifan is out of the list entirely, due to inactivity.
