Hilby had a 4½ score with two rounds to go. After defeating FM Gauri Shankar in round 8, he needed to win on demand with the black pieces in the final round to get his norm. He was paired up against IM Kevin Wang, and ended up getting what will surely turn out to be a memorable 38-move victory.
In round 2, he beat second seed GM Magesh Panchanathan with the black pieces. With all his pieces pointing at White’s king, Hilby found a formidable attacking move in the following position. Can you find it?
