Markus Ragger wins Vienna Open

by Johannes Fischer
8/23/2016 – 310 players started in the A-group of the Vienna Open, top seed was Austria's number one, GM Markus Ragger. But in a tournament with 310 players there is not much room for error if you want to finish first. However, Ragger was more than up to the task. He started with 5.0/5 and then played a short pragmatic draw against second seed Rainer Buhmann in round six. In rounds seven and eight he won again. In the ninth and last round he then only needed a draw to finish clear first with 8.0/9.

With a rating-performance of 2775 Ragger won 10.9 Elo-points and is now very close to 2700. Half-a-point behind Ragger followed two players with 7.5/9: IM Volodymyr Vetoshko from Ukraine (born in 1998) and 11-year old German Vincent Keymer who had a rating performance of 2586, made an IM-norm, narrowly missed a GM-norm and won no less than 54.0 Elo-points.

In the last round Keymer won a convincing attacking game with Black against German GM Gerald Hertneck, in the 1990s one of Germany's strongest players.

However, Keymer's win of 54.0 rating-points was topped by another player: Emre Emin Dedebas from Turkey. The 15-year old untitled player finished with 6.5/9 and had a rating-performance of 2468, which brought him a plus of no less than 110.4 Elo-points.

The best woman in the field was WIM Josefine Heinemann from Germany who also finished with 6.5/9.
