Many players choose to open with the Sicilian to play for a win with Black and get interesting positions, but they are afraid of the long forced variations in the Najdorf, the Dragon or the Sveshnikov. 3/26/2024 – The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024 is set to take place in Toronto, Canada, on April 3-23. This event marks a historic occasion as it is the first time the Candidates and the Women’s Candidates are organized together under one roof and on the same dates. The opening ceremony will take place on the evening of April 3, while both tournaments will be set in motion on April 4 at 14.30 local time.
3/26/2024 – After it set off from India, the Chess Torch relay — which will travel the world celebrating the first centenary of FIDE — has reached the African continent. The torch arrived in Ghana’s capital, Accra. Six international stars, including Magnus Carlsen and Vincent Keymer, will compete in the Classic, which starts tomorrow, Tuesday 26 March, while over 2500 players will take part in the Open. 3/24/2024 – Bassem Amin (Egypt) and Jesse Nikki February (South Africa) are the new African Chess Champions. Amin scored a remarkable 8½/9 to claim the title in the open section, while February barely escaped with a draw in the final round to become the outright winner in the women’s category.

3/18/2024 – Endgame training on the computer is much easier and more efficient than it used to be. The quickest way to learn is with a good coach. Surya Ganguly was Anand’s second for a long time, but he is also great at teaching the basics, as he does with his course “Endgame Essentials”. Unmissable!
3/16/2024 – The African Individual Championships 2024 kicked off on March 13 in Accra, Ghana, the city that recently hosted the chess competition of the 13th African Games. Both the open and the women’s championships are 9-round Swiss events with a classical time control. The events run until March 20.
3/14/2024 – WGM Mitra Hejazipor was born on 19 February 1993 in Mashdad, Iran, and became Iranian Women's Champion in 2012. But she left her country because she did not want to wear the hijab, or headscarf, and went to France, where she became a French citizen in 2023. She also became the French women's champion that year. She recently played in the Werder Bremen Jubilee Tournament, which ended last week. 3/10/2024 – The 57th edition of the Biel Chess Festival will take place on July 13-26 with its usual mix of elite tournaments, amateur events and attractive side activities. Remarkably, this edition will see two Triathlons taking place simultaneously: the Masters and the Challengers. Praggnanandhaa, Vincent Keymer and Le Quang Liem are the top seeds in the main event.
3/10/2024 – The Swiss Queens Wednesday Series, launched in partnership with the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is an initiative aimed at boosting women’s participation in chess. With tournaments every Wednesday, the series has attracted some of the strongest players from around the world. Five editions were played in February, with Martha Fierro, Valentina Gunina, Anastasia Bodnaruk, Gunay Mammadzada and Polina Shuvalova emerging victorious in each of them.
3/7/2024 – Nodirbek Abdusattorov is the sixth champion of the prestigious chess festival. In the process the the 19-year-old Usbek grandmaster rose to the fourth position in the world live ranking, ahead of the reigning world champion Ding Liren. 3/6/2024 – Yevhenii Yelieiev is an International Master, German U25 Champion, and a short while ago he invited the public to join him on his "Journey to Grandmaster" on YouTube. As part of this journey he offers training and training advice and also checks training materials. In a recent video he wondered whether "Do you really need to buy ChessBase in 2024?" - and answered this question with a resounding "Yes".
2/29/2024 – At 90, you must be the oldest chess grandmaster in the world, or so we thought when we honoured Klaus Darga on his 90th birthday. But that's not true. German chess journalist Stefan Löffler, editor of the "Schachkalender", knows better. There are even older ones. This is also due to the fact that FIDE recently made Andreas Dückstein from Austria (photo: Martin Stichlberger) an honorary grandmaster.
2/27/2024 – Lela Javakhishvili emerged as the winner of the Georgian Women’s Championship 2024. One of the most successful Georgian chess players, Lela clinched her fifth national title. As is often the case in Georgian Women’s championships, it was a very close race among the top-rated players and the members of the very strong national team. Nino Batsiashvili and Meri Arabidze finished in second and third place, respectively.
