5/10/2024 – In their search for ways to throw their opponents off balance and create unusual positions, players such as the American GM Brandon Jacobson and Magnus Carlsen have recently tried out the so-called 'Meadow Hay Gambit' in blitz games: 1.a4 e5 2.Ra3!? An offer to win the exchange that Black cannot really refuse though White gets a surprising amount of compensation. 5/8/2024 – FIDE has announced the start of the application process for the ChessMom project. The initiative aims to support professional chess players who are mothers of infants under one year of age at the upcoming Chess Olympiad set to take place in Budapest on September 10-23. The organizer will recognize both the child and the accompanying caregiver as integral parts of the National Official Delegation.
5/4/2024 – It has been two weeks since Dommaraju Gukesh became the youngest-ever World Chess Championship challenger after obtaining outright victory at the Candidates Tournament. The player who was closest to catching Gukesh in the final round was Fabiano Caruana, who missed clear winning chances in his round-14 game against Ian Nepomniachtchi. 5/3/2024 – GM Yair Parkhov from Israel continues to lead the Sardinia World Chess Festival - with 6.0/7 he is half a point of no less than nine players with 5.5/7. In round 8 Parkhov has White against Kirill Shevchenko. In the B-Open Alexandra Botez leads with 6.5/7 and is one point ahead of five players with 5.5/7. 4/28/2024 – Aydin Suleymanli (pictured with his father) emerged as the winner of the Azerbaijani Championship 2024. The 19-year-old native of Baku prevailed over Mahammad Muradli in the final match to capture his maiden national title. 5/3/2024 – The TePe Sigeman & Co tournament is taking place from 27 April to 3 May at the Elite Plaza Hotel in Malmö, Sweden. The tournament is an 8-player single round-robin featuring Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Arjun Erigaisi and Vincent Keymer as the top seeds. 4/29/2024 – The Greek Chess Federation is hosting the European Women’s Individual Championship this year. The tournament is taking place on 18-30 April in Rhodes, Greece. The tournament is played over ten rounds according to the Swiss system. 4/27/2024 – The Women’s Grand Prix is a series of tournaments launched by FIDE in 2009 to promote women’s chess. FIDE is pleased to announce the list of players who have secured their place in the 2024-2025 WGP Series. All 14 qualified players have earned their spot thanks to fulfilling the qualifying conditions. The remaining six players to take part will be nominated by the organizers of each of the six tournaments. Reigning women’s world champion Ju Wenjun will not take part in the series — she was replaced by Sarasadat Khademalsharieh.
4/26/2024 – BBC Factual announced a new competition format, “Chess Masters”, for BBC Two and iPlayer. Across eight episodes, passionate and highly skilled players from all backgrounds will battle it out across a series of rapid chess games before one will be crowned the title of Chess Master. The announcement comes a bit over 40 years after BBC2 aired “The Master Game”, a popular show that ran for seven series, from 1976 to 1983.
4/23/2024 – The FIDE Candidates Tournament, which captivated audiences for three weeks, is in the books. The closing ceremony was held at 1 Hotel Toronto, the residence of the players for almost a month. 4/21/2024 – Tan Zhongyi secured outright victory in the Women’s Candidates Tournament after safely drawing her game against Anna Muzychuk with black. Gukesh D, on his part, first drew Hikaru Nakamura and then had to wait for the result of the game between Fabiano Caruana and Ian Nepomniachtchi. Caruana missed a number of winning chances in a memorable encounter that lasted 109 moves, thus granting 17-year-old Gukesh overall victory and the right to face Ding Liren in the next match for the World Chess Championship! | Replay all the games with computer-assisted analysis. 4/19/2024 – After nine of ten rounds of the Sunway International Open on Formentera, Ukrainian chess legend Vasyl Ivanchuk and German Grandmaster Alexander Donchenko share the lead with 7.0/9 each. Half a point behind follow three players with 6.5/9. Alexandra and Andrea Botez provide additional entertainment because their games are streamed and commented live. The 10th and final round starts at 09:00 CEST (03:00 ET).
4/17/2024 – "I am a big fan of Aron Nimzowitsch," writes IM Zoran Petronijevic, who works as a chess trainer and lives in Nis (Serbia). "In yesterday's game Firouzja-Nepo, I found some ideas by him. We can often read that the study of the classical heritage of chess is completely unnecessary for advancing in chess, that the games of the classics are outdated, and that there is no (or almost no) benefit from them. I deeply disagree with that."
4/13/2024 – The World Chess Hall of Fame (WCHOF) opened “Clash for the Crown: Celebrating Chess Champions”, an all-new exhibition on April 11, 2024. The exhibition explores the histories of the World Chess Championship and Women’s World Chess Championship through a display of artifacts from the collection of the WCHOF, FIDE and loans from world chess champions including World’s No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and private lenders.

The 20-year-old from Ukraine also made smart moves at the Canadian Women’s Zonal tournament in Toronto, which ended at the beginning of April. She started as number 5 in the seeding list and ended up in a tie for first place with 7½/9 points.
