4/29/2011 – In the men's section, Kamsky showed that he was in a category of his own as he secured the 2011 title of US Champion, 20 years after winning his first, never requiring a tiebreak. In contrast, Zatonskih and Abrahamyan went to the wire for a thrilling sprint to the title. Zatonskih showed incredible perseverance and stamina as she took 19 games to become champion. 4/26/2011 – It had promised to be a change of the guard, but in the end the veterans Kamsky and Shulman had the last word, as they setup to decide the title once more. In the women's championship, Zattonskih confirmed her rise from the ashes as she overcame Krush in a very tense playoff. She meets Abrahamyan in the finals. The live commentators had a surprise interview with Garry Kasparov.
4/23/2011 – The last round of the preliminaries was dramatic, especially in the women's section where Foisor was forced into the tiebreaks precisely against Zatonskih who had just beaten her. As if signaling a change in the leadership, Zatonskih used her momentum by then trouncing Foisor in the tiebreaks. In the men's Shankland beat Onischuk to also make the semis. Report and full videos.
4/21/2011 – Four and five were the number of straight wins that Hess and Krush respectively posted to secure their spots in the finals. Despite nervy play play from all, Hess showed his nerves were steadier than most, much as Krush who won five straight games after her initial loss. Foisor lost the lead after a slip though should make it. The final two rounds will be intense! Illustrated report with videos.
4/19/2011 – Past the midway mark of the preliminaries in the US championship, one of the men's groups is seeing 19-year-olds Robert Hess and Sam Shankland take the reins, while the other group is dominated by veterans Kamsky and Shulman. The women's is still led by Foisor followed closely be a resurgent Krush. The illustrated report of rounds three and four includes a video interview with Hikaru Nakamura.
4/18/2011 – The 2011 US championship started with the top American players there, albeit missing Nakamura in the men's section, but gaining Seirawan who breaks his eight-year fast. The men's event is still broken into two sections qualifying two players from each section. The women's is a classic round-robin in which Foisor surprised with an opening win over champion Irina Krush. FM Mike Klein reports.
