Rapid search for games with sacrifices

Answer

Honing one’s tactical abilities is an important component of home training. In their search mask ChessBase and Fritz offer a useful option for rapidly filtering out of a database games which involve a sacrificial combination. This option is to be found in the search mask under the tab Position.

If you tick the option “Sacrifice”, then the program automatically fetches from the database all those games in which material was sacrificed in the short term. There is no problem combining this option with other search criteria. Example: White = “Tal”, “Wins only” and the option “Sacrifice” in the search mask will immediately filter all games by World Champion Tal from the database you have selected.

The search lists, e.g., the following game from MegaBase.

Tal, Mihail - Kampenuss, Peteris

Tal played 22. Ng6  1-0

The search for sacrifices rapidly brings you a rich selection of games which are well suited for home training. This function provides chess journalists with a very practical aid when looking over recent tournaments in order to filter out from the great number of games the spectacular ones.
